Bridge over Troubled Water

A song that impacted the world is "Bridge over Troubled Water" by Simon and Garfunkel. It has influenced many people through its smooth and mellifluous lyrics. The symbolism of the "bridge over troubled water" depicts the separation of God and humanity. The bridge represents the connection to God and the troubled water is the sin and wrong in the world. Many people believe that this connection of the bridge is offering a relationship with God. Along with the relationship with God, Simon and Garfunkel also portrays a man's loves for another human just like God loves mankind as a whole. To help get their point across the use parallelism in the lines "When you're down and out / When you're on the street/ When evening falls so hard" adds a greater  affect and power to these lyrics. Repetition of certain lines "like a bridge over troubled waters" and "I will ease your mind" create a greater impact on the listener and his feelings towards the song. Simon and Garfunkel demonstrate poetic devices throughout their song to carry there meaning of God's love for mankind in times of need.

When you're weary
Feeling small
When tears are in your eyes
I will dry them all

I'm on your side
When times get rough
And friends just can't be found
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down

When you're down and out
When you're on the street
When evening falls so hard
I will comfort you

I'll take your part
When darkness comes
And pain is all around
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down

Sail on Silver Girl,
Sail on by
Your time has come to shine
All your dreams are on their way

See how they shine
If you need a friend
I'm sailing right behind
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind
